With 2022 right around the corner, it’s out with the old and in with the new. Spoiler alert, there will be a continued focus on digital currencies, blockchain technology, the Metaverse or Web3, and a possible shift in where startups and investors decide to plant roots. So, without further ado, here are the top 5 predictions for the year 2022

​Prediction #1- Digital Currencies Will Dominate

There is a widespread belief that digital currencies are no longer a fad and will show more dominance in 2022. Central banks worldwide recognize cryptocurrency poses a threat to their control of the money supply. Therefore, many are taking the position if you can’t beat ’em, join ‘em.

Recently, the central bank of Nigeria started its pilot of digital currency. As Tage Kene-Okafor reported, “It joins 14 other countries now in the pilot stages with their own central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), including China, Sweden, and South Korea, with a total of 81 countries in other stages of exploring CBDCs.”

I believe that Digital currencies will dominate significantly more in 2022 and beyond as banks, financial legacy infrastructure, and old regulations will all have to adjust rapidly to the widespread adoption of digital currencies.

A Statista survey shows a clear trend in this direction. “People from countries in Africa, Asia, and South America are more likely to own or use cryptocurrency than those in Europe, North America, or Australia.” Further, TheStreet.com shows evidence that politicians agree, stating, “politicians from several Latin American countries have begun calling for the adoption of Bitcoin as legal tender. The interest in Bitcoin seems to be motivated by inflation, the reliance on the U.S. dollar, and a way to attract tech entrepreneurship.”
