Hello. We’re from ○○ Elementary School. Let’s enjoy English. We have three skits. The first is : “Momoko’s trip to the U.K.." Yuki: Wow! London is a wonderful city. Judy: Yes. We have a lot of interesting places. Look! That's Matt. Yuki: Hi, Matt. Judy always talks about you. Judy: Matt is a Sherlock Holmes fan. He knows a lot about Sherlock Holmes. Matt: Let's go to Baker Street by tube. Yuki: What are these? Matt: They are pictures of Sherlock Holmes. He lives on Baker Street. Yuki: Does he really live there? Matt: Yes, he does. Judy: No, he doesn't. Matt! Matt: Sorry. Just kidding. Yuki: Oh, Matt. Judy: Look! That's the Sherlock Holmes Museum. Matt: This is Sherlock Holmes. Yuki: He's very clever, right? Matt: Yes, very clever. But he doesn't work alone. Judy: Dr. Watson helps Holmes with his work. Yuki: I see. We have Edogawa Conan in Japan. He's a detective in comics. Judy: "Conan"? Does that name come from Conan Doyle? Yuki: Yes, it does. Second: "So Many Countries, So Many Customs." Mike: How was your homestay in Australia? Momoko: It was more interesting than just traveling, but I was at a loss at first. Mike: Oh, were you? Momoko: My host mother pointed to the fridge and said, "Help yourself." Mike: Did you get any food? Momoko: No. How could I do so? Mike: Momoko, your host family wanted to treat you as a member of their family. That's the most important point of all. Momoko: Yes. I understood that later. They just hoped that their guest Would feel at home. Mike: I once had a similar experience in Japan. Momoko: Oh, did you? Tell me about it. Mike: My host mother always made Western food for me. Momoko: Always? But I hear you like Japanese food better than Western food. Mike: Yes, I like rice the best for dinner, but she always gave me bread. Momoko: She probably thought you liked bread the best. She was treating you as a guest. Mike: I understand that now. She was just trying to be polite to me. Momoko: Each country has its own customs. We have to understand the differences. Mike had a stomachache and asked the doctor in English, "Can I eat?" The doctor said, "Kekko desu." It meant "No" to Mike. So he didn't eat all day. "Kekko desu" was more difficult than "Ii desu" to him. Momoko had a similar experience at a party in the U.S. An American friend of hers said to her, "Would you like some tea?" Momoko liked tea better than any other drink. So she said, "Oh, I'm sorry." She didn't get any tea. Momoko was speaking in English, but thinking in Japanese. Thank you. Third: "Leave a Message" Maki: Moshi moshi. Brown: Hello? Maki: Hello. Brown: This is John Brown. May I speak to Mr. Suzuki, please? Maki: My father is not at home now. Brown: All right. May I leave a message then? Maki: Sure. Brown: Tell him we've changed plans for our club activities. Maki: You changed the plan. Brown: Please ask him to call me back after 2 p.m. Maki: OK. After 2 p.m. Is that all? Brown: Yes, that's all. Thank you. Goodbye. Maki: Goodbye. Now it's time for a translation quiz game. If you know the answer, raise your hand. Thank you for listening. Goodbye.
