Bank of Israel stops daily Dollar purchases

OnMonday, Bank of Israel governor Stanley Fisher announced that the Bankwould stop its purchases of $100 million per day, which he hadinitiated a year ago to take excess dollars off the market, halt therapid appreciation of the shekel, and thereby protect exporters. TheBank’s foreign-currency reserves stood at $52 billion at the end ofJuly. The dollar dropped 1 percent to NIS 3.87 in local markets afterthe announcement.

Meantime, Business Data Israel reported on Sundaythat nearly a third of the 500 leading companies in the Israeli economy- those with the largest turnover – registered a loss in profits in2008 due to the global recession that started last fall, compared with9 percent in the previous year. Many of the companies marking losseswere hit by the fall in the dollar rate in 2008, which slowed exports.
