Konichiwa, kneidlach: Tokyo's Israeli food scene is thriving By Rotem Maimon | Jan. 6, 2015 | 6:30 AM Haaretz Chana's Place is likely to be ready to greet the public next week, but don't forget the other Israeli food joints in the Japanese capital, even if they lack kashrut status. Kosher restaurant to open in Tokyo Dec 26, 2014 9:51am jta.org The new restaurant began operations several weeks ago, Rabbi Mendy Sudakevich, Chabad’s emissary to Japan, told JTA on Friday. However, the restaurant, which is called as Chana’s Place, is currently only open by appointment. “Initially, the restaurant will seat 14 in its small dining area but has another hall with 48 seats that may be used for larger groups or if the clientele grows,” said Sudakevich, who has been living in Japan since 2000. In addition to the city’s Jewish population of a few hundred people from Israel, North America and France, the new restaurant, which is located at the Beit Chabad in the Takanawa neighborhood in central Tokyo, is designed to cater to non-Jewish locals and tourists from Israel, who last year numbered 13,000 and are arriving in growing numbers. “The Jewish community declined in recent years, and the 2011 earthquake did not help matters,” Sudakevich added. “But recently we have been seeing an uptick in tourism from Israel that will only increase as the two countries seek greater cooperation than ever before.” In addition to signing several memoranda enhancing security and trade relations this year, Japan and Israel in October announced they would issue one-year work holiday visas, which allow tourists to work legally for a period of one year in either country. Exposed: The international scandal of Israel’s Dead Sea product hawkers BY MELANIE LIDMAN Sept 17, 2014, 1:06 pm timesofisrael A New Zealand mall made headlines when it booted out an Israeli cosmetics kiosk for aggressive tactics earlier this summer, but the US has been investigating fraud and illegal employment for years Kiosk selling Dead Sea products ejected from New Zealand mall BY JTA June 26, 2014, 9:28 pm timesofisrael Company refunds woman, 82, who says she was coerced by Israeli staff into buying $5,000 worth of cosmetics Post-army travelers or Dead Sea scammers? By JTA 03/18/2014 23:2 Jpost Congress and State Department at odds over visas for young Israelis following a recent spike in number of Israelis being denied visas. The battle between members of Congress and the State Department over tourist visas for Israelis features two competing archetypes of the young Israeli traveler. The lawmakers paint a picture of a world traveler, matured by service to country, who deserves a break from the stresses of the Middle East. US consular officials, meanwhile, have warned of lawbreakers hawking dubious Dead Sea beauty products in malls and at rest stops. The debate surfaced publicly with a March 6 letter from Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) to Secretary of State John Kerry and James Ragsdale, the acting director of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. In his letter, Schumer expressed concern about a recent spike in the proportion of Israelis being denied visas to visit the United States.
